108th Westlake Master Forum | Ho-kwang (David) Mao:Transformative Science at Pressures

Time:15:00-16:30, Tuesday, October 19th, 2021

Venue:Auditorium, First Floor, Building 5, Yunqi Campus

Host: Dr. Shi Liu, PI, School of Science

Speaker

Ho-kwang (David) Mao received B.S. from Taiwan University, M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Rochester. From 1968 to 2018, he worked as a Scientific Staff at the Carnegie Institution of Washington.  He was elected as a Member of the U. S. National Academy of Sciences, a Member of Academia Sinica, a Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a Foreign Member of the Royal Society (UK). Since 2015, he has established Center for High Pressure Science and Technology Advanced Research and worked as the Director to advance high-pressure physics, chemistry, materials and Earth sciences and related technology.

Abstract:

Transformative research is driven by ideas that have the potential to radically change our understanding of an important existing scientific concept or leading to the creation of a new paradigm or field of science.  The recently enabled ultrahigh pressure research has opened an unprecedently vast field for pursuing innovative definable goals, such as metallic hydrogen, room-temperature superconductors, and harder-than-diamond materials. More importantly, totally unexpected discoveries are leading to transformative science through interdisciplinary high-pressure research in physics, chemistry, earth and materials research.
