Michael Reed is Associate Vice President for Academic and International Affairs and Professor of Engineering at Westlake University in Hangzhou, the first private research university in China. He received B.S. and M.Eng. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and the Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, where he was a Hertz Fellow. He was previously on the faculties of Sichuan University, University of Virginia and Carnegie-Mellon University, and held visiting appointments at ETH Zurich, University of Twente (Netherlands) and the University of Freiburg (Germany), and was a Member of the Technical Staff at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories. His research interests center around micro- and nano-fabrication technologies and microsystems applications.

Dr. Reed was the Technical Chairman of the 1995 IEEE International Workshop (now Conference) on Micro Electro Mechanical Systems, and the General Chairman of the 1996 meeting. He also organized the 1996 Materials Research Society Symposium on Materials in Microsystems, and from 1998 to 2016 edited the journal Sensors and Materials. He holds 18 issued patents related to microsystems technology and microfabricated medical devices. With Ron Rohrer, he is the author of the textbook Applied Introductory Circuit Analysis for Electrical and Computer Engineers (Prentice Hall) and approximately 130 research publications. He was a co-founder of the medical device startup company Setagon, Inc., which developed drug-eluting cardiac stents incorporating nanoporous alloy coatings; the company was acquired by Medtronic in 2007.
