Our doctoral programs in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Electronic Science and Technology are globally recognized for their strength of faculty and interdisciplinary focus. Our three schools - the School of Life Sciences, the School of Science, and the School of Engineering - are pioneering, supportive, and innovative communities of scholar-practitioners focused on building excellence between science, medicine, technology, and engineering. Our undergraduate programs in Science and Engineering combine rigorous, broadly-based fundamentals with in-depth specializations to prepare our students for the future. Undergraduates have a common curriculum during their first year and select a major in their second year. Students also study subjects in the humanities, social sciences, and other areas.

An important feature of our program is a study-abroad experience for up to one academic year. Students will gain a global perspective by studying at one of our many partner universities in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

Westlake fosters intellectual curiosity by engaging students at an early stage. Through research inquiries and immersive experiences, students actively acquire skills needed for career success and leadership.

Westlake University offers a broad range of short-term and summer programs to both undergraduate and Ph.D. students. Westlake short-term and summer research internship programs provide students with hands-on research experience in one or more of Westlake University's 300 different laboratories and the opportunity to learn from our world-class faculty. If you are currently enrolled at an institution abroad and wish to study for a semester or longer at Westlake University, you can apply to our study abroad and exchange program. Exchange students from a partner university should apply through their home university. Undergraduate students from non-partner institutions may apply directly to our program. What Ph.D. programs at Westlake University are offered to international applicants?

There are currently four Ph.D. programs available to international applicants. The School of Life Sciences offers the Ph.D. program in Biology. The School of Engineering offers the Ph.D. program in Electronic Science and Technology. The School of Science offers the Ph.D. program in Chemistry and houses the joint Westlake University-Fudan University program in Physics.

How can I apply to a Westlake University Ph.D. program?

Eligibility:

Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens with:

1.A valid passport.

2.Be in good health.

3.Have a master’s degree in a related subject.

Application Materials:

(1) A photocopy of your passport:

Photocopy of valid passport bio data page. Passport must be an ordinary one and should not expire before December 31, 2023. Applicants currently residing in China also need to provide a copy of the page containing a valid visa or residence permit.

(2) Personal statement:

More than 1,500 words in English are required for Ph.D. applicants. The content should include (but not be limited to) why you want to study at Westlake, why you want to do research (expected content of the research proposal), personal achievements, experiences worth mentioning in your opinion, and your attitude towards life and research.

(3) All diploma and degree certificates:

The original or a notarized copy of your certificates (or proof of impending graduation for applicants in their final year of study). If the certificates are not in English or Chinese, you must also attach a notarized translation in English or Chinese.

(4) All transcripts:

The original or a notarized copy of your transcripts showing all your studies for your bachelor’s and master’s (if applicable) degrees. If the transcripts are not in English or Chinese, you must also attach a notarized translation in English or Chinese.

(5) Evidence of English language proficiency.

(6) Catalogue and abstract of published papers or other documents that prove academic ability(not compulsory).

(7) Two recommendation letters:

The referee must be a professor or a person with an equivalent academic title. The recommendation letter should be in Chinese or English and include the referee’s signature and contact information.

When is the application deadline for Ph.D. programs?

The 2023-2024 Ph.D. admissions application has two rounds for Ph.D. programs in Biology, Chemistry, Electronic Science and Technology, and the Westlake University-Fudan University joint program in Physics.

1^stRound: The first-round admissions application window opens on September 5^th, 2022 and closes on November 13^th, 2022.

2nd Round: The second-round admissions application window opens on November 14^th, 2022 and closes on March 31^st, 2023.

How much are tuition costs and other fees for Ph.D. programs?

Cost of Tuition

Tuition costs for Westlake University Ph.D. programs in Biology, Chemistry, and Electronic Science and Technology are10,000 RMB per year.

Tuition costs for the Westlake University-Fudan University joint Ph.D. program in Physics is37,000 RMB per year.

On-Campus Housing Fees

On campus housing is guaranteed for all admitted graduate students. Graduate students have the choice to live on or off campus.

Are scholarships and other funding available to international Ph.D. students?

Westlake University is committed to reducing financial barriers for doctoral students so they can focus on their academic goals. We provide financial support for our doctoral students to cover their tuition, on-campus room and board rates, insurance premiums, and other living costs.

Is sufficient research funding provided?

Westlake University provides ample opportunities and scientific research funds for each laboratory, allowing our Ph.D. students to find research funding for their projects.

What traits, qualities, and experience are important for applicants to our Ph.D. programs?

The program focuses on applicants’ academic research potential and current contributions to their field. Meanwhile, personal statements, recommendation letters, and transcripts will also be considered for entrance into the program.
