Overview
Westlake University is a new type of high-quality research-oriented university based in the historic Chinese city of Hangzhou - a stunning city well-known throughout Asia for its long history, rich culture, fine arts, delicious cuisine, and beautiful scenery. Our university was founded by prominent globally respected scientists and scholars. At Westlake, we emphasize academic freedom, research excellence, interdisciplinary engagement, and international collaboration. We are committed to building a truly international, world-class, research-oriented university.
Westlake has three schools: the School of Life Sciences, the School of Science, and the School of Engineering. Each school features cutting-edge research facilities and extensive research opportunities in key provincial and municipal laboratories. Ph.D. programs at Westlake University actively promote cross-disciplinary research and there are ample opportunities to combine research interests from other Ph.D. programs or from any of the three schools’ program research fields.
There are currently four Ph.D. programs available to international applicants. The School of Life Sciences offers the Ph.D. program in Biology. The School of Engineering offers the Ph.D. program in Electronic Science and Technology. The School of Science offers the Ph.D. program in Chemistry and houses the joint Westlake University-Fudan University program in Physics.

Application Timeline
International Applicants
The 2023-2024 Ph.D. admissions application has two rounds for Ph.D. programs in Biology, Chemistry, Electronic Science and Technology, and the Westlake University-Fudan University joint program in Physics.
1stRound: The first-round admissions application window opens on September 5th, 2022 and closes on November 13th, 2022.
2nd Round:The second-round admissions application window opens on November 14th, 2022 and closes on March 31st, 2023.

Eligibility:
Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens with:
1. A valid passport.
2. Be in good health.
3. Have a master’s degree in a related subject.
4. Evidence of English language proficiency.

Application Documents
International Applicants
Application Materials:
(1) A photocopy of your passport:
Photocopy of valid passport bio data page. Passport must be an ordinary one and should not expire before December 31, 2023. Applicants currently residing in China also need to provide a copy of the page containing a valid visa or residence permit.
(2) Personal statement:
More than 1,500 words in English are required for Ph.D. applicants. The content should include (but not be limited to) why you want to study at Westlake, why you want to do research (expected content of the research proposal), personal achievements, experiences worth mentioning in your opinion, and your attitude towards life and research.
(3) All diploma and degree certificates:
The original or a notarized copy of your certificates (or proof of impending graduation for applicants in their final year of study). If the certificates are not in English or Chinese, you must also attach a notarized translation in English or Chinese.
(4) All transcripts:
The original or a notarized copy of your transcripts showing all your studies for your bachelor’s and master’s (if applicable) degrees. If the transcripts are not in English or Chinese, you must also attach a notarized translation in English or Chinese.
(5) Evidence of English language proficiency.

(6) Catalogue and abstract of published papers or other documents that prove academic ability(not compulsory).
(7) Two recommendation letters:
The referee must be a professor or a person with an equivalent academic title. The recommendation letter should be in Chinese or English and include the referee’s signature and contact information.

Step 2: Submit the online application. (Note: Application fee is waived for this year’s applicants)
Step 3: Track your online application status closely and wait for admissions decision
We may contact applicants for supplementary information. The application review usually takes about two weeks after the application deadline. (In special cases, it may take longer.) You may periodically check the application system for updates to admissions status.
*Note:Applicants who are admitted to the Westlake University-Fudan University joint program in Physics will also need to submit a separate application to Fudan University in summer 2023 and pay an 800 CNY application fee to Fudan Universityhttps://istudent.fudan.edu.cn/apply).

Tuition costs for the Westlake University-Fudan University joint Ph.D. program in Physics is37,000 RMB per year.

On campus housing is guaranteed for all admitted graduate students. Graduate students have the choice to live on or off campus.

Domestic Applicants
The 2023-2024 PhD admissions application has three rounds for PhD programs in Biology,Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry,Materials Science and Engineering, Electronic Science and Technology, Computer Science and Engineering, and Environmental Science and Engineering.
1st Round: Applications to this round are reserved for students in the direct enrollment program and must be recommended by their undergraduate university. The comprehensive assessment is expected to be arranged in September 2022.The application time for the first round is generally from August to September 2022. The summer camp for this program is scheduled to be held from June to July 2022.
2nd Round: The second-round admissions application window opens on September 5th, 2022 and closes on November 13th, 2022. The comprehensive assessment is expected to be arranged from November to December 2022.
3rd Round:The third-round admissions application window opens on November 14th, 2022 and closes on March 31st, 2023. The comprehensive assessment is expected to be arranged from March to April 2023.

Applicants must be Chinese citizens and:
1. Be in good health.
2. Have a bachelor’s or a master’s degree in a related subject.
3. English proficiency. Official scores can be submitted from the (CET) College English Test; (TOEFL) Test of English as a Foreign Language; or (IELTS) the International English Language Testing System.

1.Personal statement:If you are applying to the School of Engineering your personal statement must be written in English. If you are applying to the School of Life Sciences or the School of Science, and you have a non-Chinese speaking PI among your intended advisors, your personal statement must be written in English. In other situations, either Chinese or English may be used to write the personal statement.
Please use the Personal Statement to describe inmore than 1,500 words why you want to study at Westlake, why you want to do research (expected content of the research proposal), personal achievements, experiences worth mentioning in your opinion, and your attitude towards life and research.
2.Certificate of Enrollment:Must be stamped with the official seal of the university’s teaching management or academic department.
3.GPA Ranking:Official comprehensive GPA rankings from undergraduate degrees must be stamped with the official seal of the university's teaching management or academic department.
4.All diplomas and degree certificates:Original or notarized copy of all diplomas (or proof of pending graduation for applicants in their final year of study). If diplomas are not in English or Chinese, applicants must submit a notarized translation in English or Chinese.
5.All transcripts:Original or notarized copies of all academic transcripts for both bachelor and master’s degrees. If transcripts are not in English or Chinese, applicants must submit a notarized translation in English or Chinese
6.Evidence of English language proficiency: (CET 6; IELTS 6.5 or above; Or TOEFL 90 or above).
7.Certificates for any scientific achievements or awards:Certificate of awards for extracurricular scientific and technological activities or other kinds of academic awards.
8.Two recommendation letters:Recommendations must be written by professors who can attests to your former and future academic potential. Recommendation letters should be written in Chinese or English and include the referee’s signature and contact information.
9.Academic writing sample: (Not compulsory but recommended).
