"Westlake University is a wonderful platform for researchers with true dedication, passion, persistence and imagination.”

Biography

Pengfei Hu was born in 1991 in Lu’an, Anhui province, China. He received Master’s degree (2014) at East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) under the supervision of Prof. Xiaofeng Tong. He then joinedProf. Scott A. Snyder’s group and earned his PhD degree in August 2019at University of Chicago.From September 2019 to March 2021, Pengfeiconducted postdoc research at Phil S. Baran’s lab at The Scripps Research Institute, where hewas a Hewitt Foundation Fellow working on synthetic electrochemistry. Dr. Huis currently an assistant professor atWestlake University since April 2021. His research interest is total synthesis of bioactive natural product, synthetic electrochemical chemistry, and medicinal chemistry.

Research

Dr. Hu’sresearch focused on developing unconventional synthetic strategies and methodologies for highly efficient synthesis of complex natural products. Hisachievements includes,

1.utilizing a tandem Heck and ring contraction strategy for the first total synthesis of presilphiperfolan-8-ol, a sesquiterpene containing a highly strainedtrans-5-5 fused framework;

2.using quaternary centers to guide natural product synthesis by turning the traditional synthetic challenge into a beneficial element to simplify synthetic planning, which resulted a concise and scalable preparation ofsix conidiogenone family natural products;

3. the discovery of a Pd-catalyzed cyclization, C−O bond formation cascade featuring a Pd(II)-mediated CO bond formation on an unactivated C(sp3) center.

4.the development of an electroreductive coupling of unactivated ketones and olefins, in which the traditional nucleophilic ketyl radicalcould react with electron-neutral olefins.
